NIGHT SIGHED, LOOKING OUT AT DUSK, WISHING FOR DAY. Dusk was unhelpful, and a little vengeful with all the red sunsets that never seemed to shift to softer purples or grays. Dusk had always been that way, and as Night studied the ripples in the air where the worlds had splintered, he gave a shiver.

“Won’t be long now.”

The words were not spoken, but he heard them. Dusk, whispering them on the wind out of the earth and up to where Night held the moon.

The rip in the sky was translucent, no bigger than a feather. It was many things. A warning, change, and least, or perhaps most of all: hope.

Who would have thought hope possible?

Day would. Night thought Day would have seen something beautiful, while Night lost every bit of beauty when he lost Day.

Dusk grumbled, the sky shifting into a fiery indigo. Beneath Night, Florence paced the perimeters of the forest, searching for a way in, unable to break the barrier set by the Fates. Now those three, that was a magic Night wouldn’t have minded having. Though he didn’t think the rebirth they went through every millennium would have been quite as enjoyable. But still. They were free. They weren’t stuck, the man in the moon to bear witness to the world, neighbor to an angry twilight.

The ripple shimmered and Night peered into Dusk, where Magic held tight to their salvation before stepping beyond the hedgerow, and once more Night wondered what price this bit of hope would eventually cost them all.
